Science

A NASA satellite caught a giant tsunami doing something scientists didn’t expect

When a huge earthquake struck near Kamchatka, the SWOT satellite captured an unprecedented, high-resolution view of the resulting tsunami as it crossed the Pacific. The data revealed the waves were far more complex and scattered than scientists expected, overturning the idea that large tsunamis travel as a single, stable wave. Ocean sensors confirmed the quake’s rupture was longer than earlier models suggested. Together, the findings could reshape how tsunamis are modeled and predicted.

La Befana's Night

And it was a long weird one for me. Couldn't sleep until after 3 AM only to have someone call the house at 7 AM (non emergency, OMG) and then my cousins were out here from 11-1. One lives not that far from here but the other was up from NC with his girlfriend.

It was actually a nice visit. Afterward that, it was warm enough to melt the ice and Mom and I escaped the hill. Managed to get to Macy's, picked up a last act shirt and blue jeans (all for under 34$ yay), some St. Germaine's liquor to add to my cocktail collection (am contemplating tossing the bottles all over the place back home, maybe the landlord will think it's such a mess because I drink too much) and then on to homegoods to get a new frying pan and whatever other trouble I could find (this time its name was pfeffernusse, and no I'm not sorry)

Almost blacked out at what the Chinese restaurant had jacked their prices too (we had an old menu)

I didn't get much writing done but I did finish the last of my planned [community profile] fandomtrees stories. Now to see if there is anything I can do in the many zero or 1 gift trees.

I got this from [personal profile] trobadora and [personal profile] sanguinity, the New Year's Book Prediction Meme

I got 'I know he swaggers' from one of the two books and "The next thing I knew I was hit in the side by what felt like a streetcar.'

Hmmm I wouldn't mind meeting a swaggering man but we know which of these I'll get.

And it's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is #8 a song from your first concert. I am ashamed to say I can't even remember which WAS my first concert. I think it was this. If not it was very close to being the first.

And finally i have the whole prompt list

Quiet day, mostly

My alarm went off at 10:00, but I hit the snooze button until 11:40. Then I got up, and had breakfast and coffee. Then I showered and dressed.

Then I got out the external dvd/cd player and experimented a little. To my joy, the player did everything I tried. I don't know if it can burn a cd or dvd yet though. The way the paperwork is written is a little confusing on that point. I'll experiment with that at some later time.

My mail was delivered, and I received the copy of The Big Golden Book of Poetry that I ordered on Ebay. It's in great condition, exactly as I remember it. So happy to have it.

I was going to watch Knives Out, but by then it was around 3:40 and Knives Out is two hours and 10 minutes long. I wanted to get my laundry at 5:00, so the movie would run too long to do that. and no, I didn't want to stop it and restart after going out.

So I just puttered online for awhile. Just before 5:00, [personal profile] mashfanficchick called, and we talked for awhile about what we'd been up to.

Then after we got off, I got my shoes and socks on and went out for the laundry. Nothing of interest to note.

Then I got back on the computer, and for some reason went to LibreOffice, which is the program I use for word processing. It said there was an update, a new version and I should download it. OK.

So I did, nothing much involved in that. Had to restart the computer but OK. Then I went to open the program and... nothing. It wouldn't open. The documents I created with it, all the writing I've done on this computer, was in the documents folder but the documents wouldn't open. Nothing.

I tried restarting the computer, that didn't work. I was starting to panic a little. But it was time to Team the FWiB so I calmed down and did that.

We talked about an hour and a half, and during that time, I figured out the next thing to try was downloading the program again on the assumption something didn't download right the first time.

So after we got off, I did that. I ended up doing it several times because the download box kept showing up, I think I clicked the download to many times. But no matter, after the last time, I tried it and LibreOffice opened right up. All my writing was there, all safe.

So that was the excitement for the day. After that it was almost pet feeding time so I made myself dinner and ate, and then fed the pets.

And here we are.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Clean laundry.

3. The cd/dvd player works well.

4. I got LibreOffice working.

5. Friends.

6. Got my poetry book.

(meme, health, work, us, observe)

Disclaimer: my new year for goals and growth and change starts at the beginning of March because, ugh, darkness.

But happy new year! (Again) Because this is the first day back to work and so on, the year feels restarted even more today.

I celebrate that using strong ("Super-potent Ultra-high") steroids and antibiotics have brought great relief. I am cautiously optimistic, although i look forward to seeing the relief persist in the summer and in the midst of work stress.

I celebrate an insight from therapy that i may be bringing the sense of last year -- emergency on emergency -- to this year with C's upcoming surgery and the trip to Ohio. Instead of interpreting the energy of my colleagues as urgent critical -- thus emergency -- energy, i might try to interpret it as excitement enthusiasm.

Christine and i took a slightly delayed junket to Raleigh for a little more anniversary observation. The Gregg Museum of Art + Design had some powerful exhibits. The "In Search of Thoreau’s Flowers" wasn't as cool as i had hoped, but the cyanotypes on glass with gold gilding -- https://www.leahsobsey.com/thoreaus-flowers -- by Leah Sobsey were wonderful, as were also all the insects and pines that graced the entrance. I suspect my botanical interests wanted more; Christine thought it was great.

I hadn't expected ‘the halls of a changing sea’  and WORDS = POWER to be as moving as they were. WORDS = POWER was probably moving more in a meta-impression: queer and trans focused works up in a state (affiliated) institution stirred hope. ‘the halls of a changing sea’ also was a strong meta resonance with strong connections to plants and soil as well as queer identity. I look forward to experimenting with the soil of this place in my own way. Currently, what i want to do is carve a large chunk of the saprolite, rock so chemically weathered it is almost clay, soft and cuttable, yet still distinctly not clay. I want to set it on a raw log plinth and photography it regularly as it dissolves in the weather.

The museum had not existed when i was at State, but i had helped raise funds for it (as an undergraduate participant in the visual arts committee of the student activities program). As an undergraduate employee i did data entry, with the Avon perfume bottle collection most memorable. They still have them: http://searchgreggcollection.arts.ncsu.edu/mDetail.aspx?rID=1983.004.127a-b&db=objects&dir=GALLERYOFART&osearch=avon&list=res&rname=&rimage=&page=1

We also stopped at the used book store and exchanged a box of books we'd been hauling around, and then went to Krispy Kreme, which no longer has the diner-like counter, which i will always remember due to a poem someone wrote about meeting their best friend Jim Beam at the counter, and the professor Not Getting It. Much memory, very fun.

Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny and cool.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/5/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a large flock of sparrows.

I might have overdone the rebounding for the first few days; I felt somewhat stiff over most of my body for those few days. I know some of it was from squatting down for an extended period while I attached the bungee cords around the edges of the rebounder, but some of it was probably just because you're using muscles all over your body when you're rebounding. I've been reading up on rebounding (which I should have done before starting to use it), and learning that it works to tone your whole body even if you don't use it at a high intensity. Plus it's good for lymphatic drainage, which I already knew. I've now found quite a few 15 or 30 minute rebounder workouts for seniors and/or beginners online, so I'm working my way through those.

For Christmas I bought Mail Order Mystery kits for each of the girls. Aria's and Eden's arrived at the end of December, but poor Violet is still waiting for hers, which is very upsetting for her now that's she's seen what the other two received. Today I emailed the company and received a response within a couple of hours. They said they will send a second letter by expedited mail with tracking, so I hope they follow up with this. The original letters didn't have tracking (that I could find) which was very frustrating. They did say the first letter could just be held up in the mail system, which I understand, but that doesn't help Violet's impatience.

  1. Grab the nearest book.
  2. Turn to page 126
  3. The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

The first book nearest me is Metallurgical Assessment of Spacecraft Materials and Parts by Barrie D. Dunn (1996).

The sentence is: "Special fibres giving more options in strength, stiffness, light weight, and endurance against heat have been developed (Klein 1988)."

The chapter containing it discusses composite materials and ways to control their properties. The thing that makes me happiest about that particular sentence is the use of the Oxford comma.

The second book nearest me is The political diaries of a chief whip by Simon Hart (2025).

The sentence is: "It feels like authority is ebbing with every hour."

The chapter containing it is titled "April 2021-January 2022" and I think we probably all remember painfully well the fiasco that was the handling of pandemic restrictions to which this sentence clearly relates.

Cue hollow laughter as I realise the sentence is applicable to both work and home life. Particularly with a teenager and a tweenager incessantly challenging boundaries.

Last Week's Movie Quote...

Scarlett: Have you got a boyfriend?
Young Bridesmaid: Yes.
Scarlett: What's his name?
Young Bridesmaid: Dolph. He's good at table tennis. What about you?
Scarlett: No. Afraid not.
Young Bridesmaid: Why not?
Scarlett: Don't know. Because most of the blokes I fancy think l'm stupid and pointless - and, so, they just bonk me and then leave me. And the kind of blokes that do fancy me, I think are drips. I can't even be bothered to bonk them. Which does sort of leave me a bit nowhere.
Young Bridesmaid: What's bonking?
Scarlett: Well, it's kind of like table tennis, only with slightly smaller balls.

It's all about the weddings and funerals.
Yes, it's from "Four Weddings and a Funeral" released in 1994.
It starred, and made a star out of, Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell, Kristin Scott Thomas, John Hannah, Rowan Atkinson, Charlotte Coleman, and many others......
