i work hard to keep myself from doom scrolling -- but news about the drought situation in CA fills me with dread. and if you like almonds, apricots, dates, kiwis (ick), figs, nectarines, pistachios, plums, walnuts, avocados, grapes, lemons, melons, peaches, and strawberries? you should be worried, too.

my gut tells me it's going to get worse before we either normalize it or it gets better -- and i worry that it will get worse than even i can imagine. and i can imagine mad max scenarios with little to no effort. the fact we're going to most likely have another la nina (you bitch) this next season just makes the concern worse.

anyway.

i've been idly talking about buying land in either northern WI (near mister's fam) or MI (nearish mister's fam) and two days ago i shifted from idle talk to active talk. my idea is a large parcel of land on a river or (wouldn't this be nice?) a lake -- where we could lease out parts for lumber or ag until we either moved there or didn't.

mister's dad is a real estate agent, and supposedly is looking for land for us. because land loans are way more difficult to get than home loans, we might have to do some thinking about how best to do it. until then, we'll just keep socking money away and seeing where the road takes us.

i was up this morning at 5:00 because kimjoybestdogever had an accident of some type (i think she harfed) on the bed. by my feet. o.O generally speaking, i am a REALLY light sleeper and i can't believe that she did that without me waking up and catching it. ninja dog! so, yeah. i took a shower and dried my hair before anyone else was up. first time in FOREVER that i've done that.

bedding is in the wash, i cleaned dinner-mess off the kitchen island (we didn't do it last night), watered the back garden, and am on my second cup of coffee. all of this by 8 a.m. -- definitely a gold star for me day.

*

ok. i think there should be a bit of brekkie, a bit more coffee, then some work...on something. :)

It's really scary to think how dry some areas are.

When Sparks' family bought their farm, it didn't have any buildings on it. The bank wouldn't give them a loan for a property with no buildings, there just had to be SOMETHING there. So, they went to Sears and bought a shed and assembled it on the property. Loan approved!

California's water supply has been in the news for months, and it's of huge concern. We need to think innovatively about solutions because doing it as it's always been done isn't going to keep the water flowing indefinitely. I don't blame you for seriously considering a move. People aren't taking climate change seriously. I think we all think "someone else" will do it -- or some such mentality.

But -- choosing to live by a river? I'm not so sure how wise *that* is! Consider the reverse problem: flooding! Think: the Kentucky floods. Rivers rise in rain-soaked areas. Might a lake be better? You know -- maybe there are no safe places.

Dog barfs on the bed? I've awakened to a cat barf at my feet with bedding that needed laundering. We love our furkids!

I lived in LA for a short window of time in 1999. As much as I enjoyed it as a community hub, I would never choose to live somewhere with a lack of water. Friends who boast about living in California can have it, I've no interest in living in such an arid region.

i was wondering about that! i found a nice property with the scariest "house" i've ever seen — my guess is even the raccoons wouldn't want to live there. lol but, because there's a structure, it would be a completely different type of loan.

right now the big talk is on making sure we utilize grey water and look at desalination — with CA providing as much food as it does to the US, i would think there would be a vested interest in the whole country helping out. but who knows?

ok. so the river idea might not be good. lol

i DID find acreage that has its own lake...so that might be doable. =D

socal is too dry and sunny for my tastes, too. but i do LOVE everything california has to offer. and honestly, when we are dealing with an el nino weather event, we are definitely not arid.

well...socal is, but they're weird.

I would think it would behoove the entire country to help with water solutions - I mean - we all care about CA's veggies! And, who knows when your area might be hit with a water shortage and you will need those solutions yourself? But - it's funny how provincial we all are -- until it isn't provincial anymore.

I was only mentioning the river thing with tongue in cheek - but - sadly - there might be a modicum of truth to it, depending on the area.

I adore California and spent most of my adult life there. (Berkeley, Oakland, Monterey.). But I think it's a scarey place these days between the drought, the fires, the earthquakes, and the outrageous cost of living.

Land in Michigan and Wisconsin sounds like an excellent idea to me.

Yeah, La Nina needs to go away. I fear we'll have another dry winter because that massive warm water blob in the North Pacific is not dying. That thing was responsible with last decade's drought, too. Stupid global warming.

Oh yes, I hear of these droughts and can’t even begin to imagine. It just sounds so scary. Living right on Lake Erie, well….y’know. What area-ish of MI are you considering?

Heard about that. Of course, if they just stopped watering all the golf courses that would save a ton of water.

yep, that's another big bone of contention we have going on right now. BUT...a LOT of golf courses actually use grey waste water to keep the links green. Still...

Grey water is better. Too bad more people don't find xeriscaping pretty.

I have been reading about the water on my breaks at the poll worker job. Scary stuff indeed.

I have always toyed with the notion of living in Northern Michigan. Such beautiful area!!!

OK, so i'm a dumbass. I meant MN not MI. =D the kid was born in duluth and we lived in northern WI before she was born. i didn't make it a full year before i told mister i was moving back to california and he was welcome to come back with me if he wanted. lol

it just keeps CIRCLING there — i'm actually becoming more adept at monitoring weather patterns. :( i'm just hoping the forecasts are wrong and that SOMETHING happens to get el nino to push his bitchass sister out of the way and bring us some water.

it looks like CA is now offering home owners money to xeriscape! that's a good thing! i think a lot of people WANT to do it, but it's overwhelming.

i meant MN not MI...i guess i wasn't a stickler for details the day i wrote that. ah, well. the pollution in the lakes in MN are better (overall) and i'm all about those clean and pretty lakes.
