dialogue tags
Jul. 12th, 2021 09:58 am* yesterday i was looking for some writer's workshop materials on dialogue tags and went down the rabbit hole. there are some strange ideas on how to spice up your writing out there, friends, and one way is to create "fresh" dialogue tags. you know, instead of:
"That looks lovely," she smiled.
or even
"That looks lovely," her smile showed her sincerity.
you get this:
"That looks lovely," she smiled, a smile that was the kind of smile you smile when something pleases you greatly.
.....i am not kidding. that was the advice for fresh dialogue.

* my piece of CA is still in the midst of a heat wave and it's treacherous. :( i read about the thousands of mussels that were cooked alive in the 125 degree heat and it made me so, so sad. we have fucked things up on this planet, and instead of being all "oh, hell, we need to try to mitigate the damage and heal" you have people who are all "more coal, more fossil fuels, more more more more" and these people are truly the creators of the uruk-hai.
that said, i'm still hopeful for the future generations: more and more young people are rightfully pissed off about things and are striving for change. when the undead like mitch finally pass on, maybe there will be less obstruction to change. why "change" means SOCIALISM to some people is beyond me. kind of like common sense gun laws mean "TAKIN MAH GUNS" to some people. i'm baffled.
but back to the heat.
it's hot, about 10-12 degrees above the normal average...but that may be breaking next week. we actually may have an 88 degree day on friday. o.O WOW.
* we are having a mouse situation in the living room. SIGH. one of the pitfalls of rural life, friends. so the little bugger that is being INEFFECTUALLY hunted by all creatures great and small ran under the couch. mister put a pnut butter trap under and little nandor found out that mouse traps hurt. lol
everyone around here has said mice have been worse this summer, so there you go. ONGOING BATTLE. if they'd just stay outside, all would be well...the little hanta virus carrying assholes.
* on tap today? more engraving, more writing, and more cleaning. i thought my non-teaching life would be a little more exciting. =D
