kid starts school wednesday, so we're all going to be stupid tired for awhile. even with california adopting the "HS can't start later than 8:30" (i think it's 8:30), our school district is exempt because we're a rural community and she starts at 7:25. we are about 30 minutes (if not a bit more) from her school, so, yeah.
i'm super tempted to just stick her on the bus, but there are so many factors that are making me think that's a super bad idea and i'm going to listen to my gut on this one. so, we'll all be up early wednesday morning and acting like life sucks. srsly, we haven't had to get up before 8 in ages.
this may hurt a little.

my "backyard" (it's really not a yard, but it is in the back of the house) garden experiment is going well. i think that next year i'll be able to have a nicely functioning garden that, if my dreams come to fruition, will also be quite lovely to look at. that's the goal, people: function AND form. i picked a place to put either a contained clematis or a trough of morning glories. if i go for the clematis, i can get that in pretty soon. for the morning glories, i'd need to wait until next year.
we got a lilac and got it in the ground a few months ago, but had to dig it up because the fucknut ground squirrels or gophers were chewing it up. :( which is why i don't want to go wild planting things...we need to figure out how to do things so stuff survives.
anyway, within a few years, i'd love to look out my kitchen window or back door and see something that reminds me of an overgrown fairy garden. bad thing? the deer love fairy gardens since they're so tender and tasty. =D
even though we put my little 'maters in very late, they're thriving and have blooms and ONE ITTY tomato. my guess is we'll get less than a dozen pieces of fruit off the three plants, but i'm getting a sense of sun and wildlife from these three. next year there will be tomatoes, zucchini, peppers (bell and either serrano or poblano), and i'm going to pick two other things to try.
i'm going to turn the front of the house into a place where there are only flowers and herbs, since i love those the very most. :)

i finished watching the new star trek adventure last night and have a few thoughts.
a) wtf is up with US series starting to follow the UK idea of only having like...TEN episodes in a season? that's just bullshit.
b) i really liked it, but it took me awhile to not be pissy about a few things. after i got over those few things, the ride was quite enjoyable.
c) not every episode was great (or even good), but no episode was horrible (or even bad). that said, there were two episodes out of the ten that were AMAZINGLY flavorful and really FIT with the star trek theme.
d) i didn't like the dude who plays capt. pike at first, then i was like "NO ONE ELSE COULD PLAY THIS PART BUT THIS GUY!"
e) same goes for the dude who plays spock.
f) i have always loved star trek for its promise of diversity, but i found myself wondering why they would cast women who were so bleeding stick-skinny for two of the guest roles. one was seriously just....sicklyskinny. and if you look THAT skinny on teevee, you gotta be needing a sandwich and a few gallons of ensure in real life. and no matter what that particular actress' situation is, it just felt wrong for that to be on star trek. meh, i'm not explaining that correctly.
anyway.

i finished my barn quilt wooden puzzle thing prototype...
...and learned a LOT of things while doing it.
my plan is to sell these as a kit so people can paint it all DIY like. something like this, with the wood, the little frame, and TINY pots of paint (which would be worthless for this project, tbh) are going for like $80 + shipping on ETSY and people are snatching them up. no way would i charge that much! o.O anyway, to sell these as a project is going to require me giving some sort of directions (most important two: use a wood glue that dries very clear and work in ONE DIRECTION putting it together, dumbass) so people don't make the same mistakes i did.
because i made a few. more than a few, actually. but at the end? it actually looks really nice when placed (the picture above is not cleaned nor varnished).
i sort of love it, even though it pissed me off.
soooo, i'm going to make a new one (this time staining the wood and working from left upper corner to bottom right corner) and take photos along the way, all while writing direction to go with it. then it's a matter of finding the best way to package it. once that happens? i'm going to put them in the shop and advertise them. o.O
then i'll need a vacation. :P

At the school I taught at before, we were the earliest in the district for start time at 7:50 a.m. â it's now changed to 8:15 or 8:20 and that extra thirty minutes is having staff leave campus at close to 3:45 (we had to stay close to 30 minutes after school was out). The schools in the district that were later start are having teachers leave close to 4:30. o.O That would have been SO difficult for me as a commuter.

Date: 2022-08-09 02:15 pm (UTC)I remember early starts as well and at that age they were the worst. There are so many studies about how teens need more sleep. I get keeping the schedule for little kids because it's built around the work day for adults so the kids can't be home outside of working hours but for teenagers they could get themselves to and from school, or buses could be improved or something to give a later start option.
Overgrown fairy garden is such a dream project! Love it!
I can dig a 10 episode season as long as those episodes are well done. For me shorter seasons mean no filler episodes so if they manage 10 solid episodes I'm okay with it.
