oh, barn it

+ barn stuff is moving along and i think we have settled on a plan — at least i hope so. :) what i originally wanted was a barn kit (i've posted pictures before) that would run probably close to forty thousand dollars. i was really trying to justify that expense in a multitude of different ways, but it makes more sense to do what most people out here do — NOT have fancy traditional barns.
kid helped a lady yesterday with working horses and doing farm chores and i saw the woman's set-up and thought "this works so much better than what i originally wanted!" so that's what we're looking at now. price? POSSIBLY 25% of the barn kit cost. o.O MAYBE MORE. ima be so rich from saving money i will be able to get more horses, right? =D
we're going to talk to the builder in just a bit to price it out and hopefully have a final decision by the time they're open again next wednesday. it SOUNDS like they could have the frame built by mid june. i LIKE that. a LOT.
(we're just getting the frame built and siding on it — stalls, barn doors, and any interior build-outs will have to be done by us. realistically, it might only have stalls this year to get horses out of the weather, but we'll see. even if it's ony that, it's still good movement!)
+ i told husband that i think i wasted a lot of money on seeds and feel terrible about it. i thought i could get things going with just one grow light and my little garden shed, but it doesn't stay warm enough in there and the light's not right. :( we MAY get a few more lights and set plants up in one of the downstairs rooms with a heater, but if i want to do seedlings next year, i'm just going to need a greenhouse. or access to a greenhouse. or SOMETHING.
anyway, i have tomatoes going, got a small patch of cilantro and carrots in the ground, and need a few minutes to regroup my thoughts on what needs to be done when. there is a chance the carrots and cilantro went in too early, but i think i may be ok! mister says a hard frost is unlikely and if it's going to be TOO cold, i can cover the little plot to stay warm.
it's so exciting!
what's not exciting is that my daffodils aren't up yet. i was SURE i'd see a little poke of green, but nothing yet.
here's a picture of some of the girls:

the little redheaded one in the corner is Rooster. we hope she's not a he, but we think she may be. if she ends up being a hen? she's still going to be "rooster". :)

Date: 2024-04-14 01:12 am (UTC)oh and ps--you planted the daffodils? I wonder if they were planted too late-though down here in zone 5b/6a, I've planted daffodils at the end of December and they still came up/bloomed....

Date: 2024-04-17 01:18 pm (UTC)i did plant some in the ground, too! I just really wanted to have seedlings for the year, but i'm not sweating it too much. I saw a peek of green where I planted daffs and crocus, so it will be interesting to see if more start coming up. I followed directions on the plant site for the bulbs, but if I remember correctly, it was toward the end of the window. so who knows? lol

Date: 2024-04-17 01:19 pm (UTC)we're going to put the down on the barn today. if all goes well, we'll have it up by the end of June! =D and the camera looker? that's NikNak — she's our weightiest one and full of sass.

Date: 2024-04-17 01:22 pm (UTC)i'm loving these floofs so much. :) rooster is the sweetest out of all of them. she's also the not-brightest and sometimes just doesn't chicken very well. it cracks me up. :) and as far as the seeds? I am pretty sure they will keep till next year and i'll get SOME in the ground, but yeah...I miscalculated a lot here. lol

Date: 2024-04-16 10:56 am (UTC)Many seeds keep in the fridge. My low humidity crisper drawer has lots. Dill doesn't keep long, tho.
Indiana seemed weeks behind us when i was there last week and Wisconsin must be well behind Indiana. Hold out hope for the daffs — and the early vs late varieties can really be far apart in bloom time.

Date: 2024-04-17 01:23 pm (UTC)i've been peeking in other peoples' yards and don't see any flowers really. my MIL's crocuses are up (and I planted some of those) — so I'm just hoping because this is their first year in the ground, they're slower. yesterday I noticed a peek of green coming up, so I think I might have something soon!
