A Day of Goodness
Mar. 10th, 2025 10:39 pmIt got up to 68F today and it was positively lovely. Instead of staying home and doing some of the bazillion things that need to be done, I plopped kid in the car and off we went for horse supplements, thrifing, and a quick grocery run.
The surface of Lake Superior by Ashland is still covered in ice for the most part, but there are no more crazy weirdos out there ice fishing, four-wheeling, and/or wind sailing. Seeing people out on the ice still bothers me in a deep and visceral way, but I do have “walk across the bay to Bayfield” on my bucket list. And by walk, I mean cross-country ski or something. It’s way at the bottom of my bucket list, so if I never get around to it, so be it.
Thrifting was a little bit of an overall bust. :( I bought a pair of jeans in my next size down since my current size pants are feeling a little flappy in the thigh and butt area. There was also a little crystal heart-shaped box that was quite charming, so I had to snatch that up. The only other thing I got was a clipboard-style picture frame that I’m going to paint and use to show which chicken is the employee of the month when we go somewhere to sell eggs.
When we got home, I spent some time with Misty. I was a little ambivalent about doing things with her – when I walked outside she was bucking and farting and being a rocket-fuel horse. Yep, it’s that kind of happy horse weather. I got her haltered, intending to work with her/groom her in her stall, but instead we did some groundwork which was really eye-opening! There’s a huge puddle (ankle deep) in the pasture and I worked with her to get her to walk through it. At first, she was “NOPE, SHARKS” but we got through the issues and she went through three times with her big, beautiful, bad-ass self. Then in the arena – in a nice dryish place – I did a bit of lunging with a huge emphasis on walking and not feeling like she needs to start at a trot. I’m seeing what was asked of her previously and trying very, very hard to proceed slowly and gently so we can build trust.
She really is an angel baby.
After that, we got her in the stall and I just held her lead and breathed in and out to calm myself AND her. We zen, baby….namaste. While we did that, kid undid all the wind curls in her mane (I call them tornado twists) and brushed her out. It was very nice!
But were we done? Nope. The chicken coop needed a clean out so we did that (thank goodness the husband came out and helped or we’d still be out there) and put fresh shavings down. Now it smells lovely….for the next few days at least. 🙂
There was a brief bit of time near sunset where I sat on a bale of hay outside the chicken area and just enjoyed the moment. I felt so positively blissed out that it was hard to get up to get the horses fed.
Tomorrow is colder, so I’ll be spending time cleaning up the hot mess that is our life. I didn’t make bread as I had intended, so that’s on the docket since kid is almost out and mister and I are completely out. While I don’t eat very much bread at all, I do like my weekly eggy & avocado toasts. YUM.
Wednesday Mister is taking the day off work for psychologist meeting for kid’s diagnosis stuff and we’re going to make it a long day with another Costco run (we forgot a few things) and a visit to the Hall of Records to get Mister and kid’s birth certificates so we can finally get them passports. I NEED TO GO TO CANADIA! I hope they don’t throw things at me for being an American. =\ How fucknut was able to piss of Canada so quicky and so thoroughly is an embarrassment.
Speaking of the orange idiot and his mini-me, I think we’re stuck with the Tesla for awhile no matter what we want to do. Resale value has gone in the shitter, but I really do love her. She’s my salty queen! We have been talking for awhile (way before the election) about how I may need a different car that isn’t so temperamental in this weather, but now? It’s not just the resale value issue, it’s also that I feel guilty about thinking of selling her. What if someone bought her just to murder her for a YouTube stunt? That would slay me.
Oh, well. It will work out the way it’s supposed to. ;) It usually does.
OK, time for bed. I’m listening to the audiobook “Hex” and I’m really enjoying it! I love me a clever, well-written story. I still haven’t started my Booker winner list challenge…mostly because I want fun reads at the moment. Brain candy for the win! Plus, I’ve been in a scary book mood since October of 2024, and I just haven’t been able to get out of it.
I’m wellread enough to not feel like I have to impress anyone anymore, so yeah. I’m reading trashy (some are not trashy, though) espooky books and it’s making my heart happy. Just don’t tell my round table friends.

Brain Candy is sometimes needed. For sure. Our brain batteries need a break from time to time.
