finally, a good taco
Oct. 28th, 2025 07:00 pm+ the little and i spent the day in ashland, hanging out at a cafe while she sketched/did homework and i read/wrote a bit.
it was so nice!
after that, we went to a little mexican food place that is decent. even though they put peas in their spanish rice. the beans, though? those are very good....so they must be using manteca. ;)
i had the birria tacos which were amazing, and in a HUGE show of willpower, i only had one and a few bites of beans and rice. the rest are ready for mister to have for dinner.
in a not so huge show of willpower, i had a really small, unfrosted cinnamon roll thing that was flaky and caramelized and worth every single calorie and bit of sugar and fat in it.
THOSE are the splurges i can get behind. ;)
tonight for snacky-time, i'm going to cut up a few mini cucumbers and sprinkle them with a bit of caldo and pepper. *nod* veggies for the win.
+ thrift stores are failing me, people. the size 12s they had? too big AND ugly. the 10s? too small and....also ugly. at the point i was trying them on, i was bemoaning the fact that i only have one pair of jeans that fit. all the others are too big OR too small. IT IS THE STORY OF MY LIFE RIGHT NOW.
i did find four really cute sweaters that i snatched up, so it wasn't a complete waste.
we hit one of the town's two clothing stores and i ended up buying myself a pair of jeans that were "on sale" (eyeroll time) and a few pairs of fleece leggings. i may take the jeans back, though....the price was a little high (ok, a lot high) for jeans i can wear for another month or three tops. we'll see.
got home, was yelled at by the horse for being gone so long, got animals situated, and now i'm here, doing this, waiting for mister to be done with whatever emergency bullshit he's dealing with at work.
has he been paid for august/september yet? why, no. no, he hasn't. is there a check being overnighted because the CFO inadvertently stopped the deposit transaction because a pretty hefty out-of-cycle payment NOT marked as payroll caused all sorts of red flags and no one told him about it and yada yada.
so, suposedly we'll get a paper check tomorrow. it will be at least 10 days before the full amount of funds are available. his next payday is the first, so any bets on if THAT gets deposited without issue? lol
plus, i don't trust them to NOT fuck up the insurance...so we're trying to determine what, exactly, to do to keep from having any gap in coverage.
BAH.
oh, well. i don't doubt it will eventually get here, but i don't have faith that it will go smoothly. maybe this is the time i get proven wrong.
+ i restarted (for the 3rd time) /House of Leaves/ today and i guess i have a much more open mindset for it now vs. a year or two ago when i went in for round 2. maybe 3rd time really will be the charm! i think i got maybe a third through it last time, so if i get past that and still like it, i should be able to get 'er done.
i'm trying to read slowly and let myself savor the words. as i do that, i can feel my --
this is going to sound weird --
i can feel the thinking part of my brain hold the hand of the part of my brain that's reading. without the rush that always used to accompany me when reading, i'm able to stop and think and roll things around in my flavor pocket to pick my direction.
i'm able to linger over passages and play with them a little before moving forward.
i'm able to close the book, stare off into space for a while, and let connections happen in my brain without telling them to shush, or to speed it up.
anyway, there's adjacent style to palahniuk's that i both like and dislike all at the same time. it's something i never noticed before, and i may change my mind about it later on and decide the now me was full of utter shit and there's NO bumping of nasties between the two authors. only time and more reading (and staring off into the distance) will tell.
i will say that i think "johnny truant" is an amazing character name. right there with "hiro protagonist."

Being from "Down South", I'm well used to heathens subbing all different kinds of peas and beans for any or all of the rest of the Pea and Bean tribe.
My Hubby and I get into it whenever we make chili at our house because he's a firm supporter of RED BEANS while I am totally loyal to my beloved PINTO BEANS. (Heaven have mercy, I thought I was about to be divorced the day I slipped around and added CORN to my version of chili! Not a drop of it would he touch. I had to make the ultimate sacrifice and eat it all by myself for the rest of the week. YUM! I now call my version of chili "taco stew" to avoid getting into another heated debate with him.)
I've yet to try a birria taco, so I looked them up and they sound wonderful. I'll have to go to our local Mexican restaurant and soon just to try one.
