sometimes the flower, other times the weed

same ol' same ol': mister STILL didn't get the raise, our CA house STILL hasn't sold, and blah blah.
as far as his raise/promotion goes, i'm mostly sure it will happen, but jeez. these people move slowly.
as far as the house goes, we DID get two offers! the LA guy one and one from people in the community there. LA one we sent back a "since you are trying to sell your house yourself w/o an agent, we can't accept your offer until you have an accepted offer on your house" and the 2nd one? they backed out when their newbie agent told them the solar wasn't paid for and they'd have to pay it off/xfer the lease. still, it was an offer. a shitty one, but an offer. lol
we know that the solar is an issue with most buyers — it's why a number of people have walked. so what's the solution? apparently, raise the price by 20K and say we'll pay off the lease. which, if someone offers fullish price means we'd end up paying off half of the lease out of our pocket....which is what we said we'd do to begin with. makes NO sense to me, but whatever.
i'm just done.

i've always found it distasteful when people repeatedly insert what their job is into regular conversation. "as an attorney i'm super busy and you should bake bread at 375 degrees in a steamy oven."
i understand it's a blend of insecurity and trying to one-up, but still. meh. i don't CARE what you do for a living...i care what you read. =D
speaaaaking of books, i'm rereading /girl with a pearl earring/ because i am just having trouble finding things that hook me, so decided to go back to one of my favorites.
on tap i have:
/the secret diary of hendrik groen, 83 1/4 years old/ and volume 1 of /the foxfire book/.
what you got going word wise?

i have about a million things to do and no desire to do them. instead? i want to curl up with my book and remember how to breathe.

Date: 2024-02-02 06:26 pm (UTC)Well as an international man of mystery (now retired), here's what I've been reading. I've been reading books about aging and longevity, not because I'm scared of dying, but because I'm in love with living. I finished Becca Levy's book entitled https://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Age-Code-Beliefs-Determine/dp/0063053195" Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long and How Well You Live, and I'm currently 154 pages into https://www.amazon.com/Outlive-Longevity-Peter-Attia-MD/dp/0593236599 Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Dr. Peter Attia. In the on-deck circle to read is https://www.amazon.com/dp/0593731387 Read Write Own: Building the Next Era of the Internet by Chris Dixon.
I know I need to read more fiction, but my inquiring mind keeps telling me, "ooh, this looks interesting!" So many books and so little time it seems.

Date: 2024-02-03 06:16 pm (UTC)good for you for reading those types of books! i figure if i just ignore getting older, i'll live forever. or something like that.
i struggle with non-fiction for the most part because there isn't enough juicy drama. i LIKE juicy drama, to be honest. "into thin air" and "the devil in the white city" are my favorite non-fic books, mostly because they're told in a narrative that feels familiar to me. i like that. =D and you read what you want! there is no NEED to read anything except things that feed your soul.

Date: 2024-02-03 09:25 pm (UTC)I read a lot of history, and that's where I get my drama fix. Killers of the Flower Moon (the book is much better than the movie) is still one of the best two or three books I've ever read, (and I couldn't tell you what the other two are off the top of my head.) Now you have me curious aobout the Devil in the White City, which I've heard so many good things about from other people.

Date: 2024-02-02 06:30 pm (UTC)I read "the secret diary of hendrik groen, 83 1/4 years old" several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
A couple of days ago I started reading "Elinor Oliphant is Completely Fine" which for some reason I thought I'd read, but apparently not as none of it is familiar to me. I'm loving it.

Date: 2024-02-03 06:17 pm (UTC)i REALLY liked Elinor Oliphant, even though she really wasn't completely fine. =D Such a good little novel! Hendrik Groen and I are just becoming acquainted and so far, I like his saltiness....EVEN THOUGH he's a fish murderer.

Date: 2024-02-02 08:17 pm (UTC)I don't like the (let's be honest it is usually men) who constantly have to talk about a certain thing about themselves. My father and my father-in-law LOVE to talk about how much everything costs. Even saying, "I wonder how much that car costs that just drove by." It drives me crazy.

Date: 2024-02-02 08:28 pm (UTC)I am reading After Alice Fell by Kim Taylor Blakemore. I have had this on my kindle forever and finally decided to give it a try. I am only 10% in but so far I am liking it. It doesn't have a very high rating on Goodreads so I am a little worried that I won't end up enjoying it. But then again me and Goodreads readers often disagree, so who knows I may end up loving it.

Date: 2024-02-03 06:19 pm (UTC)i have stopped trusting Goodreads ratings, to be honest. some of my favorite novels have horrible ratings and some of my least favorite have reviews like "BEST. WRITING. EVER." ugh! that looks like a good book....adding it to the list!

Date: 2024-02-02 08:51 pm (UTC)I'm on the last few chapters of Desperate Remedies, Thomas Hardy's first published novel, and it has been surprisingly entertaining. Thomas Hardy writes a Gothic sensation novel! With odd brilliant flashes of the future Thomas Hardy. Sentences that suddenly stop you in your tracks.
And since parts of the novel are set at places I often visit — Kingston Maurward House and the village of Tolpuddle - I'm having fun spotting locations.

Date: 2024-02-03 06:22 pm (UTC)the only TH i've ever read, sadly, is in a victorian lit class in college. i'll have to take a peek! and there is something MAGIC about going somewhere that is referenced in a good book. i envy you living in a place with so much history. =D

Date: 2024-02-02 10:10 pm (UTC)I don't know if it's that way in other countries but in the US too many people judge everybody by their job.

Date: 2024-02-03 06:23 pm (UTC)i guess i'm lucky...the jobs i've worked and the places i've gone in the US have never seemed that way to me. of course there are outliers, but for the most part, that just hasn't been the case. maybe that's why the whole "LOOK AT ME I AM A [insert self-important job here]" sticks out like an annoying sore thumb.

I need to embroider that on a pillow. 😀
I am between books now and gnashing my teeth.
So frustrating that they are holding off on hub's raise. But he will get it, & the CA house will sell.

Date: 2024-02-03 06:30 pm (UTC)it's a sentiment that's served me well. before the mister, i dated a guy who was super pretty and really smart....but he didn't read. i knew we were doomed when he said i had too many books.
i'm REALLY struggling with books right now. you know how there's LITERATURE and then LITERARY FICTION? and sometimes they overlap, but for my point, let's pretend they are completely separate. anyway, i just want literary fiction at this point — and it's a STRUGGLE. even really good genre fiction (which I love, but understand its limitations) would be OK.
what am i getting? bupkis. ugh.
so....since you're looking for a read, check out /the gargoyle (https://www.amazon.com/Gargoyle-Andrew-Davidson/dp/0307388670)/ — you might like it. OR OR OR, go for /night film (https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/18770398)/ which i REALLY loved, because it's weird and full of conspiracy and you never know what's real or not. loved that book x 10000. i liked that book so much i ended up buying 3 copies at off the deep discount table because it hurt me to see them there. lol
